Shanghai Quartet with Peter Serkin, piano
Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.
Renowned for its passionate musicality, impressive technique and multicultural innovations, the Shanghai Quartet has become one of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles. Its elegant style melds the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire, allowing it to traverse musical genres from traditional Chinese folk music and masterpieces of Western music to cutting-edge contemporary works. The quartet's artistic breadth is reflected in the February 11 program: in addition to Mozart's "Hunt" Quartet, the Shanghai Quartet will be joined by the distinguished pianist Peter Serkin to perform piano quintets by Dvořák and Bright Sheng, whose Dance Capriccio is a world premiere.
Bright Sheng writes of his new work: "'Dance Capriccio,' composed for Peter Serkin and the Shanghai String Quartet, was inspired by the dance folk music of the Sharpa, a small ethnic group...mostly living in western Nepal, in the high mountains of the Himalayas."
Program
Mozart: String Quartet in B-flat major, K. 458, "Hunt" ("Haydn No. 4")
Bright Sheng: Dance Capriccio for Piano and String Quartet (world premiere)
Dvořák: Piano Quintet in A major, Op. 81
