Education Programs
of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit
Now in its seventeenth year in 2011-2012, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit Education Program is larger and more comprehensive than it has ever been, with resident ensembles providing lecture demonstrations, coaching sessions, master classes and student concerts at the Detroit Institute of Arts that reach thousands of students across southeast Michigan.
Presented by internationally-acclaimed artists who perform in the world’s most prestigious concert halls, each year the Ensemble Residency Program provides access to world-class chamber music education and performances through targeted, interactive programs. Its impact since its inception in 1996 has been shown to be profound and wide-ranging: inspiring and moving students of all ages and backgrounds, expanding their horizons, bringing world-class live classical music to underserved, disadvantaged young people, providing unequalled opportunities for advanced and emerging music students and providing powerful role models for all students, showing what can be achieved through passion, hard work and a commitment to excellence. Pianist Menahem Pressler, violinists Joseph Silverstein and William Preucil, clarinetist Richard Stoltzman and mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves are among those who have presented master classes, and the Borromeo, Brentano, Miami, Shanghai, Pacifica, Cyprus and Linden String Quartets have participated in the residency program. In 2005-2006 for the first time, the program was conducted by a piano trio: the Claremont Trio, the first winner of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson International Trio Award; in 2010-2011 the program featured the guitar (Celino Romero and Lito Romero of the famed Romeros guitar quartet) and solo piano (Jorge Federico Osorio) for the first time.
In 2011-2012, the program expands further, offering residencies three times during the school year by the Linden String Quartet, the Shanghai Quartet and, for the first time, a woodwind quintet, Windscape. For more information about the 2011-2012 programs, please click here.

Quotes from Education Program participants
"As one of the most prestigious and respected music organizations in the U.S., the Chamber Music Society of Detroit not only presents concerts of the highest quality year after year, but makes an incredible effort in its extensive outreach program to send its musicians to visit and perform for children in the area's schools… The Shanghai Quartet is proud to have been part of this program."
– Weigang Li, first violinist, Shanghai Quartet

"They [members of the Shanghai Quartet] play beautifully, elegantly. But more significantly, they give the impression of caring very much about making serious music accessible to young people in a manner which speaks to any student demographic. They were so very warm and available to my kids, so willing to connect and so encouraging to any and every student they met. What they did for our students here has significantly affected the entire program. As a teacher and a musician I am unspeakably grateful to them for their music and generosity."
- Kathy Ferris, Music Teacher, Cornerstone Schools

"Words cannot describe how grateful the teachers, students, and I am for the rich musical experience your organization has provided us. Please know that this could possibly be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of our students… Our students were in awe as they watched and listened."
-- Denise M. Fielder, Principal, Academy of the Americas

“I very much appreciated the exposure to classical guitar for my students. This was an unique, first-time experience for many. The students loved the Romeros!”
Marc Hass, Director, Orchestral Studies Program, Cass Technical High School, Detroit
